Committed to our Community

Bethany McKenney faithfully serves as our Summit County Council person for District 7 which includes Barberton, Norton, New Franklin, Clinton and part of Kenmore. Bethany has served since 2018 and is running for re-election in 2024 to continue to advocate for the citizens of our community.

County Councilwoman Bethany McKenney is a registered nurse that cares for Summit County the way she cares for patients-- passionately. McKenney is an experienced and award-winning councilperson who is committed to our community. She works hard for us in furthering good jobs, strong families, attracting and assisting businesses, supporting our safety forces, veterans, safer schools, education, overdose prevention, lower tax dollars, fiscal responsibility, transparency of government, caring for our environment, meeting the needs of seniors, flood prevention and road repairs.

She has worked to lower taxes by being the only official from Summit County to give testimony against raising property values to the Ways and Means Committee meeting in Columbus in 2023. She has also saved citizens thousands of dollars in property taxes by organizing and leading local Homeowner Tax Discount Clinics to help eligible local residents, seniors, disabled and veterans receive the homestead exemption and the 2.5% homeowner occupancy discount, lowering their property taxes.
During the pandemic,  she cosponsored Summit County CARES to help citizens keep utilities and a roof over their heads. In addition, McKenney cosponsored the Covid-19 Summit County Small Business Emergency Relief Grant which helped our businesses stay afloat.

County Councilwoman Bethany McKenney is dedicated to caring for our community. She founded and leads the COVID-19 Senior Delivery Team at BACM* which delivered food to shut in seniors during the pandemic. The Senior Delivery Team effort has grown and is still thriving today delivering food to the homes of seniors in need in Barberton, Norton, New Franklin and Clinton.

She received the state-wide 2021 Humanitarian of the Year Award from the Ohio District Kiwanis along with her husband Judge Todd McKenney for their significant contributions to caring for the community. In 2019, Bethany also received the Drum Major Award from Mothers on a Mission.

She has protected victim's rights as the Summit County Chairperson for Marsy's Law.  She has also served with the Barberton based Mission USA Disaster Relief which responds to local and global disasters such as the Barberton flood of 2013 and Hurricane Katrina. She has volunteered with Project Ed Bear which loves and supports kids battling cancer and their families. Bethany and her husband Judge McKenney have served with YEPAW for African-American teen leadership where the McKenneys' sponsor the Noah Award, an annual scholarship awarded to a deserving student in honor of their son Noah who lost his life to cancer.

AWARD-WINNING NURSE

County Councilwoman Bethany McKenney has been a Registered Nurse for over 20 years and served as District Nurse for Manchester Local Schools for over 10 years and with crisis response to Northeast Ohio schools on the Crisis Management Team for Schools. She has also served as the District Nurse for St. Francis de Sales and worked at other local schools. Prior to this,  Bethany McKenney served as an RN at Barberton Citizens Hospital caring for seniors then at as an RN at Akron General Medical Center.  

GROWING UP AND FAMILY

A lifelong Summit County resident, Bethany McKenney grew up working at the family owned small business, Sport Sales, Inc. Graduating from the University of Akron, School of Nursing, Summa Cum Laude, she earned her RN, BSN with honors.

Bethany has been married for over 25 years to Judge Todd McKenney who is Judge of the Barberton Municipal Court. They reside in the city of New Franklin and are proud parents of Selah and Nathan. They are church members at The Chapel and Charter Platinum donors and members of the Lake Anna YMCA. 

She is also a singer/songwriter who has enjoyed playing guitar, performing in churches and with her husband and kids in venues like the Beltane Celtic Festival in Columbia Woods Park in Norton and annually at the Christmas Tree Lighting at the Tudor House in New Franklin.
